We are looking for a mobile software engineer to help us go from 0-1 in building out our beta app and beyond. You’ll be one of the early hires on our team.
We’re looking for someone with the following mindset:
Hungry, self-motivated, eager to learn and applies new technology quickly
An attitude that says “it’s ok if i don’t know it, I will pick it up and be productive quickly.”
Thrives and is energized by uncertainty and the unknown
Speed focused, but also thorough in testing their own work
Comfortable with minimal structure, high ambiguity environments
Can shift gears quickly based on learnings and rapid changes
Ownership mindset, resourceful, does what it takes to get it done
Looking for an attitude "my role helps others understand what I do, but it is not meant to restrict or limit my responsibilities"
Practically, you should have the following experience:
Strong experience building mobile apps from 0-1 using either Flutter, React Native, iOS (Swift) (bonus if they're confident building in native Android with Kotlin/Java in addition to iOS)
Experienced in App Store compliance, build and deployment
Comfortable working full stack as needed, working with simple backends
Contributes beyond their hired role, i.e. product, design, business, marketing, brand
Ideally someone with experience working both in big tech and startups. At minimum, someone who has early stage startup experience, building from 0 to 1, publishing a mobile app from inception to app store.
Ideally someone senior, who is already at, or has strong potential to scale as "head of mobile" or "lead mobile engineer"
5-10 years of experience, but honestly years of experience isn't as important, it's more about quality of experience, and individual aptitude. We’d rather work with someone smart and hungry and who made the most of their minimal years of experience, than someone doing the same thing for 10+ years who wasn’t learning or stretching themselves.
To apply, email info@whyapp.co with the subject line "Mobile Software Engineer".
Thanks!
About Why
WHY is a conversation app that makes it easier to get close and stay close with the people who really matter. Our product creates a scaffolding through which relationships are built, strengthened, and expanded. Our mission is to accelerate understanding to help us all get closer … to ourselves, to each other, to our world.
The number one determinant of a good life is determined by the quality of our relationships and the key is that those relationships must be consistently nurtured. Today, we struggle to make that a reality for a few reasons:
We’re lonelier than ever. all of us. everywhere. While we are connected technically, we feel the most disconnected from each other.
We’re more socially awkward than ever. Our social muscles are atrophied due to life, pandemic and the disastrous world we live in. It’s made us all a little more introverted, reclusive and even more hesitant to reach out.
We’re more transactional and passive than ever. We are tired of performing. Tired of putting on the face of what we think we’re supposed to be. We don’t want to lead with what we do anymore. We have double tapped our way to death. We are all desperate for interactions with depth.
We know life is so much better when you have great friends and connections. We’re all so awkward now and scared to get close…and that’s ok! It’s not your fault. The world is scary, we’ve all been hurt, so hopefully this makes it easier for you.
Work Culture
We’re a tiny startup team and every new person in our orbit helps contribute to the culture. For now, here are our operating principles:
Keep it simple. Don’t overthink it.
Question things. We are here to do it our way and not the world's way. But don’t be contrarian for contrarian sake.
Seek to understand and get to the truth with one another.
If something is not working, be decisive and quick with action to change or improve it.
We don’t tolerate disrespect of any kind towards anyone. Emotionally regulate yourself and be proactive in building trust, empathy, and apologizing when needed.
Since we spend so much time at work, we make choices not just in service of our company outcomes, but also to create a positive experience and journey for ourselves and our teammates.
Handle people with care at all times, even if it doesn’t work out.
Well-done is better than well-said.
Leaders here need to be excellent at leading people, which means they need to be excellent at leading themselves.
